Tricky is a short black man with a thick Bristol accent, and a passion for his music. But he doesn't make his music alone. As with most of his albums, Tricky does not deliver the lyrics himself. Instead, he has a few different vocalists, including a woman named Martina Topley-Bird. With her sultry voice she sings out Tricky's emotional turmoils of love and hardship. Tricky stands in the back, fixing up the hypnotic trip-hop beats, the tribal rhythms, and the errie atmospherics that define Tricky even more than his deep, mummbling voice. And occassionally you'll get to hear him rumble out a quick line of confusion and self-question into the mix.

At times, the music may sound familiar. Thats becuase Tricky had once been a member of the Bristol collective named Massive Attack. So, when 'OVERCOME' sounds so familiar, thats because it is a recreation of a song called 'KARMACOMA' on Massive Attack's second album 'PROTECTION' from 1994.

In 'Hell is Around the Corner', Tricky uses the same Isaac Hayes sample that Portishead (yet ANOTHER fine Bristol group) uses in their song 'GLORY BOX' from their debut album 'DUMMY', also from 1994.

MAXINQUAYE is an irresistible record for the trip-hop, electronica, techno chillout fan. And is my favorite Tricky album, to this date.
