First things first - this album is unlike any record I've heard lately, which makes it unfortunately difficult for me to describe. But I can say this, The Private Press is a true listening experience!

For those who like turntablism (scratching n beats), this album shows off the true skills in DJ Shadow, (track 4: Walkie Talkie) and even throws it in your face with this sample: "I'm a bad man, muthafuckin deejay, thats why I walk and talk this way!." Soaked in cuts and scratches, this album just drips with the slime of a truly superior DJ.

For those who like vocals and lyrics as opposed to cuts and samples, DJ Shadow offers up a couple of beautiful songs to make you think.

Track 6, Six Days, takes the listener away from the fury of the turntable and back into the studio where Shadow shows us his skills at composing. A beautifully aged soundscape opens up the song; the vocals travel through time, and together they are served over ice. A distant voice tells us that "Tomorrow never comes until its too late..." Which tells a somber and chilling story of loss. But the album changes many times over, with this track just one of the many different styles that DJ Shadow embraces on this album.

Track 13, You Can't Go Home Again, is a catchy upbeat tune that goes through many changes in its 7 minutes. The beat stays the same throughout, while the melody shifts in and out of space with a new instrument every measure. From guitar to grand piano, cymbals to synths, this last track is an amazing work of cutting and sampling, while maintaining a true harmony.

My suggestion is that if you have the chance to listen to this record, DO IT! And if you're like me, you'll find yourself playing it all the time.
