For China

October 2003

From what little I've learned about this musical project is that Ocean Club is a weekly 2 hour broadcast of IDM/Abstract/Downtempo on Germany's Radio Eins, which is hosted by Thomas Fehlmann and Gudrun Gut. Thomas Fehlmann is probably most well known for being a member of the ambient house collaboration known as The Orb.

This is the second release to have the name Ocean Club. The first is a brilliant collection of music - a warm, flowing mix of music ranging from minimal tekno, downtempo melodies, abstract jazz sax solos, a little WWI era ditty, and back to some very well produced house music - all stitched together to sound like its playing from an old vinyl record.

This album, For China, is very similar to the first with its warm lushness and diverse selection of tracks. It crosses genres with its heavy selection of IDM, House, and Tekno, but it's sprinkled with abstract works that are less than classifiable. The end results are a truly enjoyable listening experience. An album with this much creative variety is easily listened to over and over again.
